Got a notice from your water utility?

Three steps and it’s off your desk.

  1. 1

    Find the details

The notice lists the assembly type, its size and location, and the date the test is due. Keep it next to you when you call.

  2. 2

    Call before the deadline

We set a time and quote the price on the call. Water is off for only a few minutes while the assembly is tested.

  3. 3

    Pass, or fix and retest

If it passes, the results go to your utility. If it fails, we show you what failed and quote the repair before any work.

Not sure it’s yours to test? Call (689) 698-8385 and we’ll tell you straight. Some utilities, OUC among them, test residential meter devices themselves.

Test keeps you compliant · Repair fixes a failed test · Install replaces the assembly.

Which device do you have?

Four kinds of backflow protection

The type is on the tag or in your utility’s notice. Each one is tested a different way.

RPZ · reduced pressure zone

Two check valves plus a relief valve that dumps water if pressure reverses. The highest level of protection.

Common on: commercial buildings, restaurants, medical offices

DCVA · double check

Two independent check valves in one assembly, with shut-offs and test cocks on each side.

Common on: commercial and community irrigation, lower-hazard lines

PVB · pressure vacuum breaker

A spring-loaded check and an air inlet. It has to sit above the highest sprinkler head it protects.

Common on: irrigation systems

Dual check at the meter

A small device built into many residential meter connections. It isn’t field-testable like the other three.

Good to know

Questions, answered

How often does a backflow preventer need testing? +
Testable assemblies (RPZ, double check and PVB) are generally tested every year, and again after any repair or installation. Your utility’s notice gives the exact due date.
I’m an OUC homeowner. Do I need you for the test? +
Usually not for the device at your meter: OUC installs, tests and maintains residential backflow devices itself. Call us for a commercial property, an irrigation or other assembly on your side of the meter, or plumbing repairs around it.
What happens if my device fails? +
We tell you what failed, quote the repair before any work, rebuild or replace it, then retest it and file the results with your utility.
Who sends the results to the utility? +
We do. After the test the results are filed with your water utility, and you get a copy for your records.
Who does the testing? +
Tests are done by a certified backflow tester with calibrated gauges, and repairs and installations by a licensed Florida plumbing contractor.
What does a test cost? +
It depends on the type and size of the assembly and how many you have. We quote the price on the call, before we come out.
Will my water be shut off? +
Only briefly. Water is off for a few minutes while the assembly is tested, longer only if a repair is needed.
Are you licensed and insured? +
Yes. We work under Florida certified plumbing contractor license #CFC1430099, which is valid statewide, and we’re fully insured. Every plumber is background-checked.
Which areas do you cover? +
All of Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties. Whichever utility serves the property, the results are filed with that utility.
